Oleg Golishnikov

Ph.D. candidate in Political Science, Southern Illinois University

About

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at Southern Illinois University (SIU) with expertise in International Relations and Comparative Politics. At SIU, I have also contributed to the Political Science Department’s research and teaching through my graduate assistantships.

I am currently on the job market and aspire to join an academic institution that values rigorous and objective research.

My research interests include the dynamics of U.S.-China strategic competition and Sino-Russian alignment. Additionally, my research interests cover security issues in Asia (Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia) as well as integration processes in the Indo-Pacific region. My theoretical and conceptual inquiries center on great-power rivalry, grand strategy, strategic culture, and foreign policy behavior.

My dissertation investigates the puzzle of strategic interaction between Russia and China in Central Asia, explaining why cooperation prevails over competition in their relationship in the region. It develops a new theoretical and conceptual framework, the Balancing Plus Theory, which incorporates both balancing and non-balancing factors to account for variation in interactions among great powers. In fact, my work combines academic scholarship with policy-oriented research, contributing to scholarly debates on states’ balancing behavior and strategies in the international system.

My research has been published or is forthcoming in the Journal of Strategic Security and Ethnopolitics, among other outlets. For more information about my publications and current research projects, please visit this page.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, playing soccer, listening to classical music, and cooking meals from different cuisines.

If you wish to collaborate, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
